A Mark Steyn speech in at the University of Western Ontario was proving too popular so they searched for a venue that was larger. The London Convention Centre owned by the city was a good choice but the city had other ideas:

“The reason offered by the LCC [in a Tuesday morning phone call] was that they had received pressure from local Islamic groups, and they didn’t want to alienate their Muslim clients. It’s interesting to note that the LCC is owned by the City of London, and is therefore a government operation,” wrote Strictly Right’s Andrew Lawton at the website.

Nice to see civic leaders standing tall to pressure when it comes to free speech.

Strictly Right have found a larger — and more expensive — venue. Mr. Steyn will speak on Nov. 1 at London’s 1,600-seat Centennial Hall.

Let’s hope for their sakes that none of those guys working for the City of London have side jobs at NPR.

…that I saw nobody address in comments at his post.

The idea “should we be the last generation”? only works on those who follow it. The world is going to belong to the people who actually exist. As Mark Steyn has said:

Experts talk about root causes. But demography is the most basic root of all. A people that won’t multiply can’t go forth or go anywhere. Those who do will shape the age we live in.

Demographic decline and the unsustainability of the social democratic state are closely related. In America, politicians upset about the federal deficit like to complain that we’re piling up debts our children and grandchildren will have to pay off. But in Europe the unaffordable entitlements are in even worse shape: there are no kids or grandkids to stick it to.

You might formulate it like this:

Age + Welfare = Disaster for you;

Youth + Will = Disaster for whoever gets in your way.

If the west takes Singer’s advice they can feel good about themselves in their childless youth, because as they get older they will be ruled and governed by those who had kids and they might not like it.

Jonah is wrong his schtick isn’t getting old, his followers are.

As the debate about Canada continues in my comments Mark Steyn points to another gem in Canada’s love affair with free speech:

On Monday Mr. Earle, a stand-up comedian of conventionally Trudeaupian views, goes on trial at the British Columbia “Human Rights” Tribunal for putting down two hecklers at his nightclub act. They were, alas for him, of the lesbian persuasion, and so he is now charged with “homophobia.” What a wretched embarrassment to a once free society.

Hey their country their rules and they will have to live with it.

Update: Via Robert Stacy (who will see her later this week) we have Ann’s Answer in her column, the conclusion?

If a university official’s letter accusing a speaker of having a proclivity to commit speech crimes before she’s given the speech — which then leads to Facebook postings demanding that Ann Coulter be hurt, a massive riot and a police-ordered cancellation of the speech — is not hate speech, then there is no such thing as hate speech.

Five Feet of Fury is all over this.

…because I was afraid that the left would figure it out but he has let the cat out of the bag:

Right now, they can trade anything — abortion, death panels, whatever. The trick is to plant the seed and let the ratchet effect of Big Government take care of the rest. I said on Rush’s show on Friday that if Barack Obama had been Bill Clinton he’d have woken up on Wednesday morning and begun triangulating. Instead, Obama woke up and figured that he needed more fierce urgency, and right now. The short-term hit in 2010 is worth it for the long-term benefits: Obscure congressmen will be just as happy as obscure ambassadors or obscure chairmen of obscure agencies. And the prize of permanent irreversible statist annexation merits the risk: Governmentalized “health care” puts us on the fast track to Euro-sclerosis and redefines the relationship between citizen and state in ways that make genuine conservative politics all but impossible. (emphasis mine)

This is my greatest fear, once it is in play it will NOT be repealed, it will Never be repealed and when the democrats have the votes they will tweak it over and over.

This is why it must be killed now! If it isn’t it will never die but our freedom’s will.
