but Chris Hitchens has only so many columns left in him so they should be promoted while there is still time:

Emboldened by the crass nature of the opposition to the center, its defenders have started to talk as if it represented no problem at all and as if the question were solely one of religious tolerance. It would be nice if this were true. But tolerance is one of the first and most awkward questions raised by any examination of Islamism. We are wrong to talk as if the only subject was that of terrorism. As Western Europe has already found to its cost, local Muslim leaders have a habit, once they feel strong enough, of making demands of the most intolerant kind. Sometimes it will be calls for censorship of anything “offensive” to Islam. Sometimes it will be demands for sexual segregation in schools and swimming pools. The script is becoming a very familiar one. And those who make such demands are of course usually quite careful to avoid any association with violence. They merely hint that, if their demands are not taken seriously, there just might be a teeny smidgeon of violence from some other unnamed quarter …

As for the gorgeous mosaic of religious pluralism, it’s easy enough to find mosque Web sites and DVDs that peddle the most disgusting attacks on Jews, Hindus, Christians, unbelievers, and other Muslims—to say nothing of insane diatribes about women and homosexuals. This is why the fake term Islamophobia is so dangerous: It insinuates that any reservations about Islam must ipso facto be “phobic.” A phobia is an irrational fear or dislike. Islamic preaching very often manifests precisely this feature, which is why suspicion of it is by no means irrational.

Read the whole things and as you do remember this is from a supporter of the Mosque.

I’m going to miss Hitchens when he’s gone

memeorandum thread here

…blaming the Mosque opponent for everything from Bigotry to trouble in Afghanistan are missing the most important card in the deck.

As we speak the Ground Zero Mosque is functioning as…a Mosque. Americans Muslims are currently worshiping there. It is right now a Mosque.

Americans are not going to force other Americans to vacate a place of worship without their consent. We who oppose the mosque like myself are not about to kick people out of the place where they are praying.

We will do our best to persuade them it is a bad idea, we will likely offer private and public concessions to try to get them to move, but if they choose to stay, then they will stay.

The attempts to dodge the Mosque for what is it, reflects poorly on them, but I must confess I’m getting really sick of the story, so lets cut to the chase.

1. The Mosque’s supporters hold every legal card at the moment.

2. Moral suasion is unlikely to have any effect unless the developers have something to lose.

3. Whatever the solution it will be spun for propaganda purposes by Islamists.

4. This didn’t become a national issue until the president choose to make it one.

5. The issue highlights the media’s separation from the American mainstream. It’s inability to understand the people it wishes to inform is its doom.

6. This issue is a loser for democrats and no amount of spin will change that, but it’s not the primary issue in the election.

Ok that should do me for a while on this issue

Is that not too long ago, this would have happened behind the scenes and we would never know about it.

How many times has AP & Reuters decided to “manage” the news in such a way to steer a story without our knowledge?

If you never understood why the internet is so important, and so HATED by those in power or who want power, this is exactly why.

BTW AP if your guidelines are the lead story on memeorandum, you are doing something wrong

Update: Doug Powers wants suggestions.

Update 2: Orwellian yes, also likely business as usual.
