…in three sentences.

My wife is starting a new job, we will be getting new insurance because of it. We are REQUIRED to provide not only our marriage certificate but the long form copies of the birth certificates of both of our children.

Having to produce a birth certificate is not an irregular occurrence for the average person so when Trump says this to the general public, they understand it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, It’s my opinion that the president is born in Hawaii, I believe that the reason for withholding permission for the certificate was to keep this alive as a club to beat people with, but I’m starting to think it is backfiring. The whole idea that something is being hidden is so embedded in the public’s mind that it establishes an idea of “otherness” that is going to hurt come re-election time. This is the law of unintended consequences.

I’m also thinking that the willingness of Trump to say aloud what a lot of other people are thinking but not saying is going to help a lot with people who aren’t involved every day. This is the 2nd time Trump has done this and both times its paid off.

Do I think he will win the nomination? No, will he make things interesting in terms of the MSM? Yup.

Update: On Morning Joe just now Joe Scarborough nailed it pointing out that the liberal audience of the View applauded when Trump said this. If the White House doesn’t see that this is trouble then they ought to. And the attempt to describe Trump as “going birther”, Mika’s disgust and the exiling of the segment to the “News you can’t use” segment doesn’t change the fact that an awful lot of people saw him say it and heard that applause.

Update 2: In comments Haiku Guy nails it big time.

What Trump is doing
Is giving us permission
To ask the question.

Exactly right.

Update 3: Here is the clip:

That audience response tells the story.

Update 4: CNN is on it.

Update 5: Great minds think alike: Bill Jacobson:

Listen to the crowd reaction beginning at the 2:08 mark, as Donald Trump vigorously and repeatedly states “I want him to show the birth certificate.” The crowd claps loudly to Trump’s words. (It seems an unlikely time for the producers to have flashed an applause light, so it is fair to assume the crowd reaction was spontaneous.)

Update 6: Now a memorandum thread. Since Robert Stacy McCain is sick today I’ll steal his line to Hit DaTipJar and encourage you all to check out my Radio Show this Saturday at 10 a.m. on WCRN AM 830 you can listen online here.

Update 7: Treacher at the Daily caller hits both of my points:

That’s why I don’t put any stock in the Birther stuff. If it were true, wouldn’t Hillary’s people have dug it up and used it?

and

But what’s really revealing here is that not only is he not laughed off the stage, but he gets a couple of applause breaks for it. Hey, Barry, when you start to lose the hens who’ll actually sit through a taping of The View…

…and this thread is still generating comments.

Update 8: Salon declares Trump irrelevant, and then spends 10 paragraphs going after him.

Hillbuzz has come out with an interesting theory as to why president Obama’s doesn’t authorize the release of his birth certificate.

As in, start asking WHY Obama won’t show his birth certificate — which is a ridiculous thing to refuse to show — and instantly the media calls you a “Birther!” and accuses you of buying into the conspiracy that Obama was born in Africa or maybe Vancouver. It was a great strategy on Axelrod’s part that kept the truth from being revealed for over three years now.

All of those conspiracy theories about Obama not being naturally born were ginned up to keep people from ever focusing on the more mundane, less sexy truth: that Obama failed to change his name BACK to Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. after it was changed to Barry Soetoro in the 1970s.

He tried gaming the system by applying for college and all of his financial aid and special treatment with an Indonesian name, but then also wanted to use the blacker sounding “Barack Hussein Obama” name when that suited him to.

An interesting theory, it is certainly possible that there is some embarrassing thing on the official doc that could be there, but in terms of the constitutional question that doesn’t matter. As long as he is born in the US it doesn’t matter if his legal name is Merlin the happy pig. Born in the US, that ends the debate.

Now Granted Abercrombie has pretty much made himself look a fool, to wit:

Abercrombie said on Tuesday that an investigation had unearthed papers proving Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961.

He told Honolulu’s Star-Advertiser: ‘It actually exists in the archives, written down,’ he said.

But it became apparent that what had been discovered was an unspecified listing or notation of Obama’s birth that someone had made in the state archives and not a birth certificate.

And in the same interview Abercrombie suggested that a long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Barack Obama may not exist within the vital records maintained by the Hawaii Department of Health.

He said efforts were still being made to track down definitive vital records that would prove Obama was born in Hawaii. emphasis mine

Excuse me? You’re the Governor of the state, President Obama is likely the most famous person ever to be born in the state and “efforts are being made”? I’m sorry that just sounds like nonsense, either he was born there or he wasn’t and either the papers exist or they don’t. It makes one look a fool to say “efforts are being made”. This isn’t raising the U.S.S. Arizona or rebuilding ground zero. It is getting a piece of paper (that has already been seen by Director of Health for the State of Hawaii) out of storage.

Bottom line if he wanted the paper out there it would be out there, bottom line 2 if the White House wanted the paper out there it would be out there.

A privacy law that shields birth certificates has prompted Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie to abandon efforts to dispel claims that President Barack Obama was born outside Hawaii, his office says.

State Attorney General David Louie told the governor that privacy laws bar him from disclosing an individual’s birth documentation without the person’s consent, Abercrombie spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said Friday.

Well then the Governor can make a formal public request to the president to release the document and the White House can say “Yes” or “No”.

Will this happen? No.

Why? Because it is to the administration advantage to continue use this issue to discredit people who oppose the president. It continues to be a club that they can use against foes. As long as that is true the form will not be released.

As for “embarrassing the president” count me uninterested.

First of all I see no reason to embarrass any person based on something that happened when they were a kid.

Second of all I can’t see how any nonsense about his parents can be any more embarrassing than the last two years. I mean c’mon how stupid do you have to be to fall for something like this:

The song Lang Lang played describes how beautiful China is and then near the end has this verse, “When friends are here, there is fine wine /But if the jackal comes /What greets it is the hunting rifle.” The “jackal” in the song is the United States.

The name of the song is “My Motherland,” originally titled “Big River.” In an interview broadcast on Phoenix TV, the first thing Lang Lang is quoted as saying is that he chose the piece.

He then said, “I thought to play ‘My Motherland’ because I think playing the tune at the White House banquet can help us, as Chinese people, feel extremely proud of ourselves and express our feelings through the song. I think it’s especially good. Also, I like the tune in and of itself, every time I hear it I feel extremely moved.”

Because nothing says “I’m a competent president of the US ” like having a song referring to the US as a “jackal” played at a state dinner honoring the man holding the winner of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize prisoner.

So I’m going to file this under “interesting but who cares”

Oh and one final thing. There was one laugh out loud line in the Hillbuzz post.

He tried gaming the system by applying for college and all of his financial aid and special treatment with an Indonesian name, but then also wanted to use the blacker sounding “Barack Hussein Obama” name when that suited him to.

And look where it got him.

Look where it got him? Look where it got him? HE’S PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!

Words fail me.

P. S. I have tagged this post with the tag “birthers” A friend of mind considers this an insulting title and at her request I’ve made a deliberate effort not to use that word to describe people who believe the president is not born in the US by that title. In terms of the wordpress search it is the most relevant tag for the post.

I have long maintained that the White House has purposely withheld the president’s long form birth certificate not because it shows that he wasn’t born in the US but because it shows he was. My theory being the president wanted the birther movement to continue to be strong on the right to give him and the left an easy club to beat them with.

However after an election that was an unmitigated disaster and poll numbers suggesting that enough people doubt his birthplace that it is actually causing him grief, there has been apparently a decision to nip this in the bud ASAP:

A unanimous verdict: All three think it’s time to release the long-form

And not only has Matthews suddenly decided that this has to come out but the new Governor of Hawaii is making an issue of it.

Why is this tool dredging up an issue that, mercifully, had begun to go away? Hawaii’s records department received only 16 requests for Obama’s birth certificate in November, down from 50 or so a month last year. Higher courts have waved away multiple Birther petitions, and the court-martial of Lt. Col. Terry Lakin ended with him pleading guilty to failing to report for duty. This subject has no traction, in other words, either legally or in mainstream media, and thus had probably never been fringier when Abercrombie spoke up and decided to treat it as a problem that needs solving.

Allahpundit doesn’t get it. The problem needing solving is the popularity of the president, not the birther stuff. It’s not that the birther narrative is any stronger, it’s that he’s governed in such a way that it would make someone believe that he is not American. (This is a logical fallacy after all the Berkeley City council was likely all born here as well as San Francisco’s. It is not being born here that is the difference it is how one is raised. see The Post American Presidency the Obama Administration’s war on America by Pam Geller).

Those actions have given said belief legs, he needs a way to turn it around, and more importantly he needs a victory that is not shared with Republicans. The disproving of the birther myth will do that, and even more importantly as some conspiracy people who haven’t read Seeing the Unseen will not believe the real document it will be something that will divide the right. (Don’t think for one minute this hasn’t come up without the White House being involved).

It is a measure of the desperation of this administration that they find it necessary to prove the president is an American to set up his confrontation with Republicans over the next two years.

…really I do, but the news of the day doesn’t allow it. Example from Ruby Slippers:

An early look at Schneller’s nominating petitions, which are still being reviewed by pa2010.com iin full, shows that Schneller couldn’t have gathered the required 4,200 signatures without help from Democrats. Schneller himself collected only about 3,200 signatures. Almost all of the remaining 4,800 signatures were gathered by registered Democrats, many of whom have clear ties to Lentz. Many of the Democrats who circulated petitions for Schneller are party insiders and activists who would surely find Schneller’s political beliefs to be distasteful at best. Schneller is a staunch conservative who has dabbled in the so-called “Birther” movement that questions President Obama’s signature.

The Tea Party has in fact endorsed republican Pat Meehan and has no interest in Schneller but as politico reports this would not have been possible without the Lentz campaign:

The Democrats who helped gather the signatures include Colleen Guiney, the chairwoman of the Swarthmore Democratic Party and a Lentz supporter; Nicholas Allred, who works for the Swarthmore College Democrats and Rocco Polidoro, among others, according to secretary of state filings.

National review calls it a stench in Pa-7. Actually this is a very old political hardball tactic, not much different than Limbaugh’s “operation chaos“.

If you are going to run for office, particularly if you are threatening the use of the Treasury as a piggy bank to buy votes of course you are going to get people using any legal tactic to stop you and you’d better be ready to fight fire with fire. Why the RNC isn’t getting Naderites on the ballot all over states like Calif and MA is actually beyond me.
